The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered that the investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s involvement in crimes related to the July-August genocide be completed by April 20.
This decision came on Tuesday, February 18, from a three-member tribunal led by Chairman Justice Mohammad Golam Mortuza Majumder.
The order came after a request was made by the prosecution during the hearing. Representing the prosecution, Additional Chief Prosecutor Mizanul Islam presented the case.
Previously, the tribunal had instructed on December 17 that investigations into two cases regarding the July-August genocide, which involve Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 44 other individuals, be completed within two months.
The case centers on the allegations that the Awami League government carried out mass killings to suppress a student movement.
Nearly 1,500 people were killed during the crackdown.
The violence led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government after 15 years, with the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus assuming power.
This new government made the decision to pursue justice for the killings that occurred during the July-August period.
